ALEECE: Are you in love?
CALEB: With whom?
ALEECE: Anyone?
CALEB: No.
ALEECE: Are you capable of being?
CALEB: I have been. I was… twice. That says nothing for the present. And the present is my gravity.
ALEECE: Can you remember at least?
CALEB: Yeah.
ALEECE: Did it take you over? Did it take you by the ankles and turn you upside down and shake you till your heart got dislodged?
CALEB: Yeah.

CALEB: I’m not in love with you. You know that. It doesn’t mean I couldn’t fall for you. It doesn’t mean I will. And it doesn’t mean I won’t. I don’t want to hurt you. Not for the world. I don’t want to give you false hopes. I don’t know how to be around you, is what it is. I don’t know whether to assume you’re strong or delicate. But I have to pick one, because that’s not the kind of thing you ask. It’s not the kind of thing anybody would answer in all honesty.
ALEECE: Can I be both?
CALEB: See?

CALEB: Why do you love me?
ALEECE: I don’t know. I don’t think you’re meant to know why you love the people you love. If it’s explicable, if you can pin adjectives on it left and right then… you’re not really in love. If I could say I love you because you’re this or that, I’d make everything too… neat and… rational. It’s more a question of “How?” than “Why?” I think. “How do you know,” you know?
CALEB: How do you know?
ALEECE: Shit… (sighs) Knowing you’re within a hundred-foot radius is a roller coaster ride. It’s anxiety and euphoria… and I shouldn’t be telling you any of this. (Caleb starts to protest) Shhh… It’s anxiety and euphoria, sadness and despair, longing, jealousy, desire, anger, fear, helplessness, excitement, unfathomable joy, shortness of breath… It’s life at its most intense and magnified – all in one blow. Like a tsunami or a hurricane. (He caresses her cheek, she removes his hand gently) It’s exhausting. If everybody could do that to me, I’d be dead. Since only you can… I know.
CALEB: I think we should –
ALEECE: (interrupting) Did I tell you I’m seeing someone? I’m seeing someone. Tentatively. But I am. It’s kind of like a nicotine patch. Caleb patch. (She laughs at her own joke, he doesn’t.)
CALEB: Do I know him?
ALEECE: How could you possibly? Do you know me? I mean, really?
CALEB: When d’you meet him?
ALEECE: I’ve known him forever.
CALEB: (wistful) I’ve met all the people in my life.
