The Excitement of Discovery (Stage Beauty)

Discovery is a thing of sheer beauty. Discovery might entail pride, but that comes after the moment I’ve set out to write about. It certainly follows reaching which, though productive, doesn’t necessarily yield the desired outcome. The thing that gives discovery its dazzling beauty happens magically within a moment. Like most things awe-inspiring, that moment is brief but eternal. It takes up a split second of real time to make itself felt but leaves in its wake a world of possibilities, such a sense of the overwhelming array of existing possibilities, such mystery as to where they come from, where they go and how on earth you ever got in a position to experience that particular one.

Stage Beauty was one of those movies I never did fall in love with, but that stayed with me on the strength of the stunning moment of discovery nestled between a rehearsal and a scene-within-a-movie that leads up to the final credits. I surrendered heart and soul to the urgent, mad, freedom-inducing, inebriating moment of discovery that visits with the characters of Ned Kynaston (Billy Crudup) and Maria Hughes (Claire Danes) as they break down the death of Desdemona scene in Othello in the most earnest attempt to bring it to life. Their discovery of just what they’re able to do in contrast to every instance of mediocrity they had previously shown themselves capable of, affects us (though vicariously) very much as it affects them, making its spine-tingling, ghostly way through them while instilling the belief that there is no limit to what’s to come…
