L.A. Nostalgia
Sitting here, past midnight, sipping from a mug of Celestial Seasonings True Blueberry Tea (can’t get enough of the fruity taste), listening to the soundtrack of Inception (can’t get enough of the layered, repetitive crescendo of Hans Zimmer’s notes), thinking of a handful of screen shots I just had to compile and looking back…
I have a playlist in my iPod called L.A. Nostalgia. Some 82 songs (only because I keep forgetting to add to them) that served as score to my near eight-year stint in the California of movies and earthquakes highlighted by the daily walks and every day discoveries that eventually sliced it in half and accommodated the California I made for myself.
L.A. was the place where I became myself for better or worse. The adult self that emerges once you shed everything that’s deciduous about you. Teeth, pubescent acne, a certain kind of fat, a certain kind of dependence. And your thoughts and tastes become fully your own. I was 19 when I moved there and 27 when I left. I looked younger at both ages and probably not in possession of as much wisdom as the environment and circumstances helped me gain.
These chosen screen shots contain no landmarks. They’re all bits of my Los Angeles. They’re images so filled with my memories I can’t help but feel they don’t belong up on a screen.

This one brought out a gasp. This wholly unexpected shot of such an unglamarous part of L.A., right in the middle of a movie. This personal landmark of my introduction to the City of Angels suddenly there again. It brought with it memories of a sighting I’d rather not revisit in writing, as well as lovely memories of munster cheese, Miracle Whip and English muffins.

The Bryson in the background, shot long before I ever got to see it up close from a window…

AMC Century 15, formerly 14… disturbingly different from how I remember it, but still recognizable…

Wilshire Beauty Supply… OPI nail polish… :)

View from within the unmistakable 8000 Sunset Complex…
Amongst a thousand others, the memory of a William Fichtner post-workout sighting…
