Tribute Scenes: Places in The Heart
This is meant to be the first in a series of posts that pay tribute to Tribute Scenes - scenes that have me in tears every single time I watch them. In some cases quite understandably given the unabashed tear-jerking nature of the scene and in others less so, which might be the case here.
The most private of these tribute scenes, this Sally Field-John Malkovich exchange from 1984’s Places in the Heart (already mentioned here) relies not on its words but their subtext. The remarkable subtlety of the actors, their canvas-like faces gently stroked by the fine bristles of small, routine actions and equally small but potent reactions.
