Kiko (199? - 2009)

Life is lost to us on a daily basis. Microscopic slivers of it, unnoticeably shaven off. Millimeters of width sanded into a miniature heap of grains. This and that opportunity. A given person, a broken tie, a faithful friend… all bits of this we call life - here one day and gone the next. The shavings pile up daily… hourly… relentlessly while we turn a blind eye choosing to follow some distraction instead. The losses add up slowly but surely towards the day they won’t take anything less than grief for a reaction. Today is such a day.
Kiko was beautiful, playful, full of life, shockingly smart and resilient…
I could stare at his profile in awe for minutes at a time.
He would ask to be petted and use his paw to try to bring your hand back to him once it was removed.
He would stand up, place his paws on your leg and then hide his little face in order to ellicit pity which he hoped would be rewarded with more petting (it always worked.)
He hated facing people - would always turn his back and wait to be petted with such a sense of entitlement… :)
He would not stand for having his front legs touched, would always pull them away if you dared.
He was fussy about food but had to inspect everything that was about to be eaten. His little nose would wiggle as he looked intently at you.
He would celebrate your arrival - if you were lucky enough to have a place in his heart - with a mix of happiness and weeping desperation, as though he suddenly didn’t know what to do with himself.
He raised his leg like a ballerina when he peed.
He barked at doorbells.
He liked Damien Rice.
He was braver than his size justified.
He was always ready to confront dogs that looked like giants next to him.
He was loved beyond words.
