Evolution is every story’s forgone conclusion and yet it manages to genuinely stun you when you pick far enough apart stills of its progression and put them side by side.
Late one night, as Stewart fell into deep sleep while I still lingered around the laptop doing this and that, it dawned on me that I had a window of opportunity to face two of those stills, a year and a half apart, literally side by side, if only I went to a certain site, to a certain profile page. And so I did. And there I had it.
A page, simple and elegant, dark and smoky, stripped down to its html bare essentials. A man sleeping soundly in warm light after a day of sightseeing. The journey from myspace to that bed blows my mind when the images converge in a single frame. It feels at once easy and impossible, it is both part of a wishful future and the fondly remembered past. It is past and future chiseled into present.
There is room for everything in a frame. There is room for a hundred different characters, in a thousand different scenes in a hundred thousand different settings. In this or that country, in this or that medium, engaging this or that sense. I see room for different backgrounds, different lighting, different destinations. I see room for different experiences, different addresses, different climates… and two people.
Not a hundred, not a thousand, not three, not one… but two.
